No Surprises Act & Good Faith Estimates

The No Surprises Act is a federal law designed to improve price transparency and reduce unexpected medical billing by requiring health care providers to inform clients of expected service costs in advance.

Under this law, behavioral health providers are required to provide a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for services to uninsured and/or self-pay clients. This estimate outlines the expected costs of services and will be provided when care is scheduled or upon request, whichever occurs first.

The Good Faith Estimate reflects the anticipated cost of services based on the information available at the time of scheduling. While therapy needs may change over time, this estimate is intended to support transparency and informed decision-making.

In addition to federal requirements, ethical guidelines for psychotherapists already emphasize clear communication about fees and financial expectations prior to the start of services. The No Surprises Act formalizes and expands these transparency practices.
